It depends entirely on the test. An online questionnaire built from a published, researched scale can be a reasonable self-reflection tool. A quiz that sorts you into a "type" after ten casual questions is entertainment. Here is how to tell them apart.
Signs of a scientifically grounded test
- It names its source. Real scales have published authors and a citation, such as "Kroenke et al., 2001" for the PHQ-9.
- It explains what it measures and how it is scored, including any limitations.
- It reports scores on traits or symptoms instead of putting you in a box.
- It is honest about what it cannot do and does not claim to diagnose.
- It does not invent norms. Percentiles require real comparison data for that specific test.
Red flags
- Promises of a diagnosis from a short quiz.
- No mention of who created the questions.
- Results that are flattering to everyone.
- Pressure to pay for a "full report" of vague content.
Why even good online tests have limits
- Self-report bias: answers reflect how you see yourself and your mood that day.
- No clinical context: a professional considers your history, medical conditions and life situation.
- Translation and culture: a scale validated in one language or country may behave differently in another.
How to use results wisely
Treat a result as a starting point. If a mental-health screening result concerns you, take it to a doctor or psychologist. If a personality result surprises you, ask people who know you well whether it fits. Compare more than one scale for the same topic when you can.
